
BIM for Infrastructure Panel
The Highway Engineering Exchange Program (HEEP) would like to announce an exciting new twist to IHEEP we have organized as part of the 2018 event. In coordination with our partners on this effort, we extend an invitation to the BIM (Building Information Modeling) for Infrastructure series of virtual meetings. There will be two virtual meetings in 2018, leading up to a panel discussion at the 60th annual IHEEP conference on September 24, 2018.
BIM for Infrastructure is a topic on everyone’s mind these days. The understanding of the key elements of BIM and its benefits seems to vary from organization to organization.
Like the US, UK public and private transportation entities are being asked to do more with less under strict requirements and significant restrictions. BIM for infrastructure has played an important role, and many lessons have come from experiences in the both the US and the UK. To date in the US, the application of BIM varies from state to state, but the desire to explore it and use it seems to be accelerating. Valuable lessons are available from both the US and UK’s experience with BIM for infrastructure.
These moderated panel discussions are geared around an exchange of ideas, where transportation practitioners can learn and understand key elements of BIM, implementation concepts and further benefits. These meetings will consist of 6 panel members and a moderator with perspectives from the Government, Consulting and Contractor point of view, with participation from both US and UK organizations. These virtual meetings are open to anyone with an interest in BIM for Infrastructure.

Moderator

Sasha Reed | VP Industry Advocacy
Sasha Reed works alongside leaders within the Architecture, Engineering and Construction sector to further the development of standards and build greater awareness of advancements in digital construction. As a member of the Bluebeam leadership team she’s spent the last 10 years working with customers to understand and better define ways to solve their challenges together. She’s the co-founder of the Construction Progress Coalition and former Secretary to the buildingSMART alliance BOD under the National Institute of Building Sciences. She is also known industry-wide as a “conversation facilitator” hosting and participating in conversations in the US and abroad. She’s a contributor on StrXur and the BD+C Magazine Digital COM Blog focused on spreading the stories that move our industry forward.
Panelists

Philip L. Bell, PLA, MPA | Director, Landscape Architecture Bureau, Office of Environment, NYSDOT
Phil is the Director of the Landscape Architecture Bureau and has more than 30 years experience working in design, construction and management including complex transportation improvement projects. He was a member of the New New York Bridge (Tappan Zee) and the Kosciuszko Bridge Replacement Design-Build management oversight teams and is currently involved with the Kew Gardens Interchange, Phases 3 and 4.
Phil is the Chair of the Civil Integrated Management (CIM) statewide working group for advanced technologies in project development, construction and operations. Phil is also the statewide coordinator for the Federal Highway Administration Every Day Counts program and was an adjunct professor for the University at Albany Planning and Geography Department.
Phil is also serving as the vice-chair of the American Association of State Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Technical Committee on Environmental Design and was Chair of the NCHRP update for the Visualization in Transportation Guide.

George Lukes | Utah DOT
George is the Standards and Design Engineer for the Utah Department of Transportation. For Standards, he manages the process for all changes and publications of Standard Specifications and Standard Drawings. For Design, he is responsible for managing UDOT’s MBDC Program which is focused on advertising the model as the legal document, eliminating plan sheets and using mobile devices to view model files. George has also worked as UDOT’s Region 2 Program Manager, Engineer for Materials and Material Implementation Engineer.
George graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Chemical Engineering. Over his 30+ years, he has worked in the inorganic mineral processing industry, hazardous waste industry and the transportation industry.

Lance Parve, MSEng, PG, GISP | Wisconsin DOT and Co-Chair TRB BIM for Infrastructure Subcommittee
Lance works as Senior Project Design-Construction Engineer /BIM Coordinator in SE Freeways/SE Region at Wisconsin DOT. His work involves planning, design, and construction of mega /major transportation projects. In this role, he also provides BIM-CAD-GIS coordination/integration, 3D/4D/xD technologies lead support, LiDAR/integrated survey reality capture coordination, and innovation support. Lance serves on the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research Board (TRB) as Co-Chairperson of the BIM for Infrastructure Subcommittee of the ABJ95 Visualization in Transportation (ViT) Committee. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the International Intelligent Construction Technologies Group (IICTG). Lance has over 27 years of industry experience - 12 public sector and 15 private sector - involving successful digital project delivery in transportation and civil infrastructure planning, design, and construction. His public sector work is over 10 years at WisDOT and 2 years in a local municipality and over 15 years private sector work in site civil and environmental infrastructure in the USA. He has a MS Engineering degree, MS Certificate Urban Planning GIS degree, and a BS Geological Sciences degree from the UW-Milwaukee, USA.

Ben Constable | Manager, Virtual Design and Construction - Kiewit Corporation
Ben constable has been with Kiewit for over 20 years - his experience spans across engineering, survey, and information technology roles.
Currently, Ben is a Manager in the Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) group. This group engages VDC processes in the early stages of design to help reduce risk, increase efficiency, and allow projects to benefit from model data throughout the life cycle of construction. Managing a core group of subject matter experts helps Kiewit projects navigate through the complexity of 3D models, big data, and new technology.

Dr. Tala Kasim | Lecturer in Construction Project Management - Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom (Webinars Only)
Tala is a lecturer in construction project management program at Aston University- UK. She has over 15 years of industrial and academic experience. Her background is civil and structural engineering with a PhD in Information management systems and BIM applications for sustainable construction. Tala is passionate about sustainable construction and the role of technologies in enhancing construction processes and performance of new constructions, infrastructure and the built environment. She is currently leading BIM modules at Aston University; she is a fellow in higher education academy and a chartered applicant member at CIOB.

Dr. Kenneth Park, FHEA, MCIOB, MRICS, PMP | Senior Lecturer in Construction - Aston University, Birmingham, United Kingdom
Kenneth has over 23 years construction research and industrial experience internationally. His research and expertise lie in the areas of construction management, whole-life management, BIM application, and process improvement. He is currently developing housing information modelling based on whole-life performance via Scan-to-BIM to improve performance and reduce environmental and financial impact. He is a Chartered Construction Manager and Chartered Surveyor in the UK.

Will Baron | Director - Keysoft Solutions
Will's career started in 1988 with six year’s experience working for Avon County Council as a Traffic and Road Safety Engineer, identifying, designing and implementing road safety engineering schemes. He developed the County’s first 20mph zone in 1992, the first safety camera scheme, and worked closely with the cycle charity Sustrans, developing and installing the UK’s first ‘Safe Routes to Schools’ scheme for the council.
He has been with Keysoft Solutions since 1994. The company provides software used by Highway Authorities and their agents, for the design of all aspect of traffic management and road safety engineering schemes.
Will is an active member of several stakeholder organizations, including the UK's Department for Transport (DfT) Signs and Road Markings Technical Working Party, and acts as Secretary to the British Standards Institute's mirror committee to CEN TC226, who have responsibility for European Road Signing Standards. He is also Chair of the National Highways Sector Scheme 9A Advisory Committee, and the Association for Road Traffic Safety and Management’s (ARTSM) WG2 Committee for road signs. He has also acted as Consultant and advisor to the Department of Transport and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in Southern Ireland, over the design of road traffic signs.

Daniel Jensen | Michael Baker International
Jensen is a civil engineer experienced projects in both Utah and Texas. He worked traditional, design-build, CMGC, as well as new MBDC/BIM for bridges and structures. He is experienced in non-seismic design for multiple span concrete structures analyzing different types of substructure variants. He is also very experienced with short and long, single span concrete and steel superstructures with concrete substructures in seismic regions. Jensen is familiar with noise walls both on and off structures, as well as retaining walls and highway overhead sign structures. In addition to design experience, Jensen has been involved in multiple load rating analysis for steel bridges, as well as prestressed concrete bridges and concrete culverts.
